Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. An attorney in Cumberland, Thomas B. Finan enlisted in June, 1941. He was attached to the 45th "Thunderbird" Division in the European theatre. Capt. Finan was reported MIA in southern France in September, 1944 and was taken as a POW. He was later promoted to the rank of Major.
