Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. Howard W. Cunningham, Electrician at the Celanese enlisted in the US Air Force December 8, 1941, after we were attacked.  He was a crew Chief and Staff Sgt and served in the 98th Bomb Group.  His plane was the "Liberator".  He served in Italy and Palestine until 1946.  After the war, he returned to the Celanese plant.
