Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. Dr. Orville G. Swartley, Chiropractor, served in the 29th Division, 175th Medical Detachment from April, 1941 through 1946.  Dr. Swartley was a Captain.  He received the Bronze Star for carrying wounded to cover under fire.  He resumed his Chiropractor Business on Decatur Street in Cumberland, MD until his death.  He served in the whole European Theatre.
