Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. Ned Renner enlisted in the US Army for the European Theatre at the age of 16. He completed 16 weeks of basic training at Sheppard Field, Wichita Falls, Texas and subsequently attended Radar School at Boca Ration Air Field, Florida. Ned was transferred to occupied Germany and served as company clerk, Hq Sqdn, 9th Air Force Svc Command and was promoted to Sergeant at 17. Ned served in the army for more than 20 years and completed four overseas tours of duty, for a total of nine years. His occupational specialities were Administrative Specialist, Deep Sea Diver and finally, Criminal Investigator/Polygraph Examiner. While in Korea he was assigned to I Corps and further detached service with the 7th Infantry Division as a CID in Washington, DC and the US Military Academy, West Point, NY. His final assignment was as Investigator-in-Charge, Pittsburgh Field Office of the Criminal Investigation Division, Federal Building, Pitssburgh, PA. Ned retired as SP7 (MSGT) on November 1, 1966, subject to recall to active duty.
