Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. Al Rosley joined the navy one week short of his 18th birthday. He knew as soon as he turned 18, he would be eligible for the draft and didn't want to serve in the army. He served on the USS Spence which sank during a typhoon. He was one of only a few survivors.
