Cumberland Goes To War is a community heritage project coordinated and promoted by Allegany County Tourism in partnership with the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, the City of Cumberland, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. Funded in part by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, the Allegany County Commissioners and the City of Cumberland. Chief Machinist Clifford Lajoie Flanagan, US Navy
Naval Ordnance, Washington, D.C.
Graduated from Parsons (WV) High School
Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1933, with a letter of recommendation from Congressman Jennings Randolph. He was discahrged after 20 years of service and transferred to the fleet reserve in 1953 as a chief machinist's mate.


During WWII he was invovled in the first landing of WWII at Casablanca, West Africa on Nov. 4, 1942 while stationed on the heavy cruiser, the USS Cleveland. During that engagment, the ship's propeller was struck by a German torpedo which did not explode.The USS Cleveland bombarded the harbor and took part in the landing.


He also was on board the first naval ship to arrive in Korea to participate in the armed forces landing in Inchon.


His brother Carl served in the Navy during WWII. Carl served on the armed guard of U.S. merchant ships. He served on the ceremonial military team duringthe funeral of President Franklin Deland Roosevelt.
