Robert Donald Shaffer
Born - November 8, 1916
Died - January 22, 1997
A graduate of LaSalle High School, Shaffer enlisted in the U.S. Army in December, 1940 and retired in 1965, serving through the Korean War and Vietnam conflicts.
During WII he was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion of the 273rd Regiment of the "Fighting 69th" infantry division which captured Leipzig prior to their link-up with the Russian Army in April 1945 on the Elbe River at Torgau. This action cut the German Army in two and virtually ended organized German resistance.
A highly decorated soldier, MSGT Shaffer also served with the 1st and 75th Infantry Division in Europe. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the 19th Infantry Regiment of the 24th Division. He served as a military advisor durin the Vietnam era, making his distinguished career cover three wars.
