Queen City Transportation Museum - 7:00 pm
Opening Ceremony and Reception – enjoy the music of the WWII era, exhibits and refreshments. The Queen City Transportation Museum is located in the former Cumberland Armory and is home to the memorial plaques which list all the WWII veterans who served from Allegany County. There are several exhibits in the entrance of the museum of WWI & WWII memorabilia.

First Wave of WWII Living Historians Land and Set-Up Camp

Brooke Whiting Museum - 5:00-8:00 pm
Open House.  Join the celebration of a WWII soldier's holiday homecoming and see WWII memorabilia, 1940's holiday decorations and vintage costumed interpreters in a house filled with treasures from around the globe.  Refreshments served.  Special exhibit honors these Allegany County WWII Veterans:

  • Brooke Whiting, an Ambulance Driver for the American Field Service
  • First Lieutenant Anne Whiting of the U.S. Naval Reserve
  • Corporal Meade Stahle of the 62nd Armored Infantry Battalion
  • Corporal William Pritts, Sr. with the Medical Gas Battalion in Germany

Veterans’ (Armistice Day)

Veterans Memorial Ceremonial Service at the War Memorial, Centre Street, presented by the local VFW Veterans of WWII are invited to attend as special guests and will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Cumberland.

Music of the Period 11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Enjoy patriotic and music of the 1940s performed by Maria Rose and Danny Ellswick.  Event is free and open to the public at Windsor Hall at Town Centre, 45 Baltimore Street.

Through the Looking Glass – 6:00 – 8:00 pm
See the official unveiling of a long-lost Cumberland treasure at “Through the Looking Glass: Memories of Love” at the Fort Cumberland Emporium, 55 Baltimore Street. A dusty mirror found abandoned in the attic of the former Lazarus Department store holds the memories of 140 young brides, who were married during the years spanning from 1939 to 1945. The tradition in those wartime years was for young ladies who purchased their bridal gowns at Lazarus to etch their maiden names and the date of their wedding into the mirror. Watch as the mirror is unveiled and the names are revealed in front of some of those very brides, and listen as they tell their marvelous stories of love and life in Cumberland during World War Two. Thomas J. Dunn will share his South Pacific Naval experiences and Gail P. Northcraft will show a Japanese flag signed by those with whom he served in the 2nd Marine Division. The 2nd Marine Division immediately entered Nagasaki following the dropping of the atomic bomb.

Second Wave of WWII Living Historians Land and Set-Up Camp

Cumberland Regional Airport - 2:30-4:00 pm
Watch as the B-25 “Mitchell” Bomber, “Briefing Time” flies into the Cumberland Airport for a three-day stay.  “Briefing Time” is one of only three flying B-25s in the world restored to its level of completeness and authenticity.  There are no fly-overs or in-plane tours due to the limited space available in the plane.  “Briefing Time” remains fully outfitted in fighting trim.

Comedy by Abbott and Costello and 1940s music by The Potomac College Jazz Orchestra – enjoy a special tribute to the top comedian team of the 1940s. Admission ticket required - call 301-724-2453.

Join the Book Center in welcoming author and WWII historian, Joe Balkoski. Mr. Balkoski, author of the widely acclaimed books Omaha Beach: June 6, 1944; Utah Beach: The amphibious and Airborne Assault on D-Day; Beyond the Beachhead: The 29th Infantry Division in Normandy; and The Maryland National Guard: A History of Maryland’s Military Forces, has been categorized by USA Today as “The top living D-Day historian.” Mr. Balkoski will lead a discussion on D-Day following the book signing at the Allegany Arts Council.
